20.Apr.2010 Sprung

It’s a nasty invasive species, but the Norway Maples are looking stunning right about now. Can’t stop staring up these days.

13.Apr.2010 40 to 1

We decided to tap our sugar maples this year. There are probably a dozen trees lining the driveway and the road - we hung pails from five of them.

We tried making syrup 30 years ago - three kids inhaling smoke while my father tried to boil the sap down in a couple of hours using wet wood. We ended up with some sugary hickory-laced liquid so runny it turned our Eggo waffles to mush.

No wonder it took us 30 years to try it again.

This time we had a healthy supply of dry fuel, a brand-new eighty-dollar pot, and four cinder blocks.

A pot filled with eight inches of sap took us about five hours to boil down. You get about 1/4 inch of liquid gold.

Voila. To be honest, it’s still got a certain smokey undertone. Dad calls it full-bodied.

16.Dec.2009 Ho Ho No.

It’s been a long time. So long that this blog was even put away under lock and key. (Now there’s a strange phrase… if something is just under lock but not under key… well what can it mean?)

In any case, the blog is unlocked and so am I. I’ve got some things to say and to show, depending on my mood. Today it’s obvious. I just could not keep this gorgeous xmas artistry to myself.

Who says orange pylons are just for film crews, honeywagons and American embassies?

24.May.2009 Does more than windows, apparently

I was searching for motivation to start posting here again. Who knew I would find it on the corner of Palmerston and Olive?

The too-little too-late correction in purple magic marker is the icing on the cake.
